A few years back we had an exchange student from Germany who shared with us a tradition at Christmas time for her family. Her and her dad would go out on Christmas eve day and find a Christmas tree. They would cut it down and bring it home to decorate. She described the decorations for the tree. It was easy to see they were plain and simple. Nothing fancy like we see on trees today. What caught my attention in her story was the lighting on their tree. All over that tree was candles strategically placed. Not fake, but real live candles. Part of their celebration on Christmas eve was to light everyone of those candles. She described how beautiful that was to see the candles flickering while they sang Christmas carols together, told stories, and ate a dinner together.
Romans 1:20 "For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
During this season let's keep in front of us that when we try to decorate everything up in our lives with all the lights, tinsel, and fancy ornaments...God through his son Jesus just went for the simple. His simple outshines all of our efforts to dress our lives up. The simple message is "He Loves Us!" Our simple message back is that we love him back with all our heart, soul, and mind. Let us work on that throughout this season. Let's keep this relationship with him simple.
Continuing the “Great O’s” prayer:
“O Flower of Jesse's stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; rulers stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.”
Continue to keep your fasting commitments going throughout this week. I believe God wants to do a great work in our lives.
